Baylor University Bears men’s basketball advances to the Elite 8 by defeating St. Mary’s. The game didn’t seem to be to hard of a match up for the Bears. The game ended with Baylor 72 and St. Mary’s 49. Baylor will definitely have there work cut out for them when they play the winner of Duke-Purdue which is played on Sunday.

The Baylor Bears seem to be on a role of good wins lately. Actually The Baylor Bears may be this years Cinderella story since their last appearance in the final four was in 1950. The Baylor University Bears as the NCAA Men’s Basketball Champions, it could happen?!

Jason And The Argonauts

Jason And The Argonauts, This brought back some memories – although its the first time I’ve seen the film as a whole. Jason and the Argonauts is a fine example of model stop frame animation techniques with none other than Ray Harryhausen, featuring some magnificent creatures of Greek mythology.

The story is a classic tale of adventure, as we follow Jason and his companions in their quest to obtain the gift of the Gods that is the Golden Fleece. Its nothing particularly special, but the lore of Greek mythology is

Is Sandra Bullock Pregnant Again? Bullock Mistresses and Jesse James News

Again there is Sandra Bullock leaving Jesse James talk and now the rumor mill is swirling with the news that she is not pregnant.  Jesse James is going to jump off a cliff under all the stress.  I don’t know what would be worse for him right now – Sandra being pregnant or another misstress coming out of the woodwork.

Speaking of Jesse, he got into a little spat with a paparazzi.  He looks like he’s on his last nerve.  Who wouldn’t be?  We’re all just waiting to see what his final misstress count will be?  Will he be able to take the Tiger?

..and speaking of the Tiger.  I wonder if he’s sitting there somewhere thanking the stars above that Jesse came along to take the heat off of Tiger.  Who would of thought that the Tiger Woods story would become the number 2 story in such a short time?

Sweet 16 – Duke vs Purdue Game Preview

The #1 seed Duke Blue Devils (31-5) take on the #4 seed Purdue Boilermakers (29-5) in the South Regional Semifinals on Friday night at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. The two teams last met in a 2008 ACC-Big Ten contest that was dominated from the start by the Blue Devils, who emerged with a 76-60 victory in West Lafayette, Indiana. A trip to the South Regional Finals is on the line in tonight’s matchup, which will feature two of the country’s top defenses.

The season-ending injury to Robbie Hummel makes Purdue a somewhat difficult team to scout, but they have played seven games without their star forward, compiling a 5-2 record. In those seven games, the Boilermakers have averaged only 61 points, while holding their opponents to an average of 60 points per game. Clearly, their margin of error has been reduced without Hummel and his 16 points per game. However, as Duke saw recently in the ACC tournament against Virginia and Miami, the loss of a star player presents an opportunity for a team to unite and for other players to elevate their games.

Like the Blue Devils, the Boilermakers have been led by their “big three” all-conference performers throughout the season in E’Twaun Moore, Robbie Hummel, and JaJuan Johnson. Moore, a 6’4” junior guard, received first-team All-Big Ten honors after averaging 16 points and 1.4 steals per game. The Boilermakers, led by Moore and sophomore Lewis Jackson on the perimeter, look to force their opponents into turnovers, ranking fourth in the country in turnover margin, forcing an average of 16 per game. Johnson is a 6’10” junior center who earned second-team All-Big Ten honors after averaging 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game. Johnson is a disciplined defender in the post, having fouled out of only two games all year. Chris Kramer, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, is a 6’3” guard who has filled in admirably on offense for the injured Hummel. Kramer has averaged 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 steals through the first two NCAA tournament games.

While many picked Purdue to bow out early in this year’s tournament, the Boilermakers defeated a tough Siena team in the first round and pulled out a gritty overtime victory against Texas A&M in the round of 32. This matchup should be an exciting one for fans of good team defense, as points will be hard to come by for both offenses. With this in mind, some of the keys to the game for Duke will be:

  1. Rebounding. This has been a strength of this Duke team all season, and they will need to assert their dominance on the boards in this game. Duke should have a size advantage at nearly every position. Kyle Singler, in particular, should present a matchup nightmare for the Boilermakers; Duke will need to exploit their size advantage on the glass and in the post throughout the game. Brian Zoubek will need to continue his strong play in the paint by crashing the offensive boards and slowing down Purdue’s Johnson on the defensive end. The Boilermakers defense will force the Blue Devils into some difficult shots, and second chance points could be the deciding factor in a close game.
  2. Turnovers. The Boilermakers have the fourth best turnover margin in the country and will try to force the Blue Devils into mistakes on offense. Duke’s “Big Three” ballhandlers will need to be strong with the ball and make good decisions to limit easy scoring chances for Purdue. Purdue will try to pressure Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith into turnovers, and the veteran backcourt will need to initiate the Duke offense effectively to take advantage of their superior size.
  3. Free throws. Purdue struggled to get to the free throw line in their second round game against Texas A&M, shooting only 6 the entire game. As a team, the Boilermakers shoot better than 72% from the line on the season. For a team that struggles to score, the Blue Devils will need to keep Purdue off the free throw line to limit easy points. On offense, Duke should look to get to the free throw line for easy points of their own and the opportunity to put some of Purdue’s pesky defenders into foul trouble.
  4. Defense. It’s the bread and butter of this Duke team. The Blue Devils have held 19 opponents under 60 points this season, and they need to bring that number to 20 tonight in Houston. If Duke plays its typical stingy team defense tonight, Purdue should have a tough time scoring enough points to keep up with Duke.

Prison union hits back at reports

Two independent reviews have described the Prison Officers’ Association (POA) in Maghaberry Jail as unreasonable and an obstacle to change.

The union has rejected the charge and said the management was to blame for problems at the high security jail.

Chairman of the POA in Northern Ireland, Finlay Spratt said prison officers were “up for any change”.

Both reports are connected to the death of Colin Bell, 34, at the jail in July 2008.

Mr Bell was on suicide watch at the time of his death and was meant to be monitored every 15 minutes.

However, some prison officers who were supposed to be watching him were instead watching television.

An inspection team appointed by the government recommended a number of changes to the prison regime last year – and on Thursday they published the findings of a further review.

It noted that some progress had been made – but said there was still too much emphasis on physical security, and that the union in the prison was not working constructively with management to ensure necessary changes took place.

The report said the union told the team they wanted to support change – but on their own terms.

It said it was time for the union to demonstrate maturity and vision by adopting a constructive approach.

Mr Spratt said prison officers were working “38,000 hours with no pay to make sure the regime is delivered for prisoners”.

“We are capable of any change, in fact I suggested to them last year that we really should be sitting down and looking at the service in light of all the reports,” he said.

“Have I heard anything from them – absolutely nothing.”

Investigated

Earlier on Thursday, another independent review highlighted shortcomings in a disciplinary process that led to 10 prison officers being recommended for dismissal.

The officers were investigated following the death of Mr Bell.

Three senior officers were also demoted, two others resigned, and cases against five officers were thrown out.

The 10 officers recommended for dismissal are appealing the ruling.

The review did not conclude that the punishments were wrong.

It was also strongly critical of the Prison Officers’ Association.

The POA is currently operating a work to rule in Maghaberry in protest at disciplinary action against the officers.

The independent review said there were shortcomings in the investigation, which were largely due to a failure by management at Maghaberry to act decisively.

But it said the POA must share the blame for defects in the disciplinary hearings for staff, because it used delaying tactics and made unreasonable demands – including requests for more than 40 witnesses to be called in every case.
